US Open resumes after two-hour fog delay

Play resumed in Thursday's first round of the 126th US Open after heavy fog halted the competition for two hours at Shinnecock.

Text size:

The fog shrouded the 7,440-yard course and stopped golfers after only 30 minutes with just 18 players on the course.

Americans Caleb Surratt and James Nicholas had parred the first two holes to share the early lead.

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, needing a victory to complete a career Grand Slam, was set for a revised 10:14 a.m. (1414 GMT) start off the first tee with second-ranked Rory McIlroy going off the 10th tee at 9:52 a.m.

The delay makes it unlikely the first round will be completed before sunset.
